Inspire: Breathing and Breath for Singing and the Voice
Module no. 8 - Breath, Voice, Music
Module no. 8 - Breath, Voice, Music (the breakdown)
I’ve got a few more advance ideas and exercises that I want to share with you, but before I do, I want to make one thing clear.
There is no right or wrong way to do any of this. In fact, that binary is never useful!
This isn’t about getting any of these exercises “right” or “correct.” Again, this I about finding more efficiency when you’re breathing so that you can sing with more ease! You’ll know when things are working because you’ll feel like the breath is easier.
It’s that simple.
This is also why words like “efficiency” are useful because they are not based in emotion. They speak to your somatic experience of the breath with can be quite objective if we don’t have a story attached to it.
If something makes your breath feel better, don’t worry about “right” or “wrong,” worry about mindful awareness of the sensations and compare that to how you now understand the breath to work.
Trust your instincts!
If you’re struggling, trust that. Go back, be patient, explore.
If you’re feeling easy and like your breath is serving you exactly how you want… go sing!
While knowledge is very much power, it is only as good as it supports your experience of your breath in your body so that you can sing songs and make music.
Be careful not to make the breath the “thing.” Your breath, as we’re working on it is ultimately as successful as you feel while you’re singing songs.
Does that make sense? We’re doing this to help you make music.
The exercises are always aimed at moving you toward free expression which should result in music.
This also isn’t about the “beauty” of your voice, but rather your ability to express yourself through the music. Sharing an honest expression of yourself.
Again, any exercise, not just mine, are only as good as they support you in creating music… maybe the music of your life.
